Phúc Lâm Pagoda
Bắc Ninh(Chùa Phúc Lâm (Bắc Ninh))
Overview & history
Phúc Lâm Tự is the formal name of the pagoda in Tam Tảo village, located in Tiên Du commune, Bắc Ninh province, Vietnam.
Location
The pagoda is situated to the west of Tam Tảo village. It also serves as the centre of spiritual activities for the local people in the surrounding area.
Architecture
Phúc Lâm Tự is an ancient pagoda built at the beginning of the 18th century, featuring architectural motifs from the Nguyễn dynasty period.
The pagoda is constructed in the shape of the character 'sơn' (mountain), with two rows of side halls (tả vu and hữu vu, meaning left and right halls) of five bays each. Behind the pagoda is the ancestral house (nhà tổ) with five bays.
The pagoda consists of seven bays and two wings, with columns made of very sturdy ironwood (gỗ lim). The ends of the roof ridges are exquisitely carved with motifs of the Four Sacred Animals (tứ linh), the Four Seasons (tứ quý), and more. Inside, many precious antiques are preserved, such as statues of the Three Worlds (tam thế), stone steles, and a pair of stone nghê (mythical guardian lions).
Within the pagoda grounds there is also a stupa garden, an ancient banyan tree, and a three-entrance gate (cổng tam quan). The pagoda garden also features a very beautiful well.
In front of the pagoda stands a temple thousands of years old. The pagoda was restored in 2009, but still retains its ancient character. Phúc Lâm Pagoda is one of the largest-scale pagodas in Phú Lâm commune, with eight roofs and eight upturned corners.
Surrounding landscape
Next to the pagoda is an ancient five-bay temple, dedicated to two generals of Thục Phán An Dương; this temple also dates back 1,000 years.
