Đông Linh Pagoda
Hà Nội(Đông Linh tự)
Overview & history
Thanh Am Pagoda, also known as Đông Linh tự, is an ancient pagoda located at number 76, Group 24, Thanh Am Street, Thượng Thanh Ward, Long Biên, Hà Nội.
History
Đông Linh tự belongs to the ancient Vietnamese village of Thanh Am, within the heritage complex of Trạng Trình – Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm. The village of Thanh Am was established when Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm brought his descendants and villagers to settle here and build it up, with its original name being Hoàng Am Village.
The antiquity and grandeur of Đông Linh tự now remain only to some extent on several stone steles and especially the bell cast during the Tây Sơn era, in the first year of the Cảnh Thịnh era (1793), as well as the Hậu Phật stele dated to the second year of the Gia Long era (1803).
The bell, cast during the Tây Sơn era, first year of Cảnh Thịnh (1793), is a precious relic remaining at the pagoda. The bell is 0.82m high; including the very top part, it is 1.20m; diameter is 0.57m; circumference is 1.57m. The bell handle is shaped like a Bồ Lao (a dragon-like creature that glides over the sea surface).
The pagoda was restored in 2002, completed on the 20th day of the 4th lunar month, year of Quý Mùi (2003). The Tổ house (ancestral hall) was completed on the 15th day of the 11th lunar month, year of Quý Mùi (2003).
