Phú Cang Communal House

Khánh Hòa(Đình Phú Cang)

Phú Cang Communal House

Overview & history

Phú Cang Communal House (đình) is located in Vạn Phú commune, Vạn Ninh district, Khánh Hòa province. The đình is situated within a spacious, airy compound covering an area of 1,700m², and its interior is arranged in the style commonly seen in rural communal houses.

The formation of the đình is associated with the early period of Vietnamese settlement and village establishment in the 17th–18th centuries. The main hall of the đình is 8 metres long and 9 metres wide, consisting of three bays, constructed in the tứ trụ (four-pillar) style with 16 wooden columns arranged in four evenly spaced rows. The đình contains an altar to the tutelary deity, an altar to Lady Thiên Y A Na, and a memorial tablet for Deputy General Trần Đường—the person who rallied the people in response to Emperor Hàm Nghi’s call to fight the French in the Khánh Hòa region. On the front façade of the đình, the upper part of the door is adorned with bas-relief carvings of sacred animals and many intricate patterns, and the main door bears a large wooden horizontal board inscribed with three carved characters: "Phú Cang Đình". The đình has been awarded many imperial decrees and precious gifts, including a Thượng Đẳng Thần (Highest-Ranked Deity) decree commemorating the merits of the village’s tutelary god, an ancient bell, and a ceremonial drum.

In 1740, Nguyễn Phúc Khoát changed the pagoda's name to Quy Tôn Tự and bestowed a vermilion lacquered and gold-gilded plaque inscribed with the three large characters 'Quy Tôn Tự' along with an eight-character dedication: 'Quốc Chủ Từ Tế Đạo Nhân ngự đề' ('Inscribed by the Compassionate Sovereign'). In 1845, King Thiệu Trị decreed that the pagoda revert to its former name.
