Quán Thế Âm Pagoda

Đà Nẵng(Chùa Quán Thế Âm)

Overview & history

Quán Thế Âm Pagoda is located in Sơn Thủy hamlet, Hòa Hải commune, Hòa Vang district, Đà Nẵng city, within the Ngũ Hành Sơn (Marble Mountains) area, beside the Trường Giang river. The pagoda belongs to the Northern School (Bắc tông) of Buddhism.

History

The pagoda was originally a tịnh thất (small monastic residence) established by Venerable Pháp Nhãn beside the Quan Âm Cave. The pagoda was constructed from 1960 to 1962. Every year, the pagoda organises a cultural festival on the Bodhisattva Quán Thế Âm's commemoration day, the 19th day of the 2nd lunar month.

Quan Âm Cave

Quan Âm Cave is a large cave discovered in 1956. The entrance to the cave is located next to the pagoda. The cave is approximately 50 metres long and 10 metres wide, with a ceiling adorned with countless colourful and uniquely shaped stalactites. The highlight is a 1.75-metre-tall statue of Quán Thế Âm, a marvellous naturally formed bas-relief. In the cave, there is also a "large stone bell" known as Thạch Chung thiên cổ, which is the bell-like sound produced by a large, round stalactite resembling a pillar, 5 metres high; and sounds like drums, wooden bells (mõ), and khánh (a type of Buddhist percussion instrument) emanate from other stalactites.

The pagoda has welcomed tens of thousands of visitors and Buddhists annually for sightseeing, worship, and activities.

Chùa Hải Tạng
Chùa Hải Tạng
Hải Tạng Pagoda is an ancient pagoda located on Cù lao Chàm Island, Tân Hiệp commune, Đà Nẵng city. The pagoda was built in 1758 (the 19th year of the Cảnh Hưng era). It is situated at the foot of the western mountain of Hòn Lao Island, with its back against the mountain and its front facing a small valley, which is the only rice field on Cù lao Chàm. Hải Tạng Pagoda worships both Buddhas and deities, serving the spiritual needs of local fishermen and also acting as a place where merchant ships from Buddhist countries would stop to perform rituals and pray. Initially, the pagoda was built about 200 metres northeast of its current location, but after storms caused damage, in 1848 (the first year of the Tự Đức era), some fishermen and merchants joined forces to rebuild the pagoda at its present site. The pagoda is surrounded by a stone wall to keep out pythons and venomous snakes. The tam quan (three-entrance gate) of the pagoda is 5 metres high, 1.5 metres wide, and 6 metres long. The name 'Hải Tạng': 'Hải' means sea, 'Tạng' refers to the Tripitaka (the Buddhist scriptures), signifying that the pagoda is a place where the vast Tripitaka is gathered like the ocean. Notably, the pagoda still preserves a great bronze bell, on which there is a dragon in the style of the early Lê dynasty, suggesting that the bell may predate the construction of the pagoda itself. Currently, the pagoda does not have a resident abbot, but is cared for by an elderly couple who tend to the incense and offerings. Hải Tạng Pagoda is also a tourist attraction for visitors to Cù lao Chàm.
